Fall 2015 i found pileated woodpecker feathers stuck to the bark of a tree in Tennessee – and learned the Yuchi tribe which once inhabited the area particularly revered pileated woodpeckers. they also worshipped the sun. they fashioned of stone gorgets- and one of the motifs was 4 pileated woodpeckers revolving around a sun. anyway, i decided to make a colorful version. and since then i often return to the gorget motif, inspired by the pattern and tribe.
